Henri Matisse

1869-1954

A major artist of the 20th century, Matisse had a significant influence on art in the second part of the century through the use of simplification, stylisation, synthesis and colour as the sole subject of the painting, both for the many figurative and abstract painters who would align with him and his discoveries.

Henri Matisse is a French painter, designer and sculptor who is considered to be one of the major artists of the 20th century. Born in Cateau-Cambrésis, he started painting at the age of 20, after studying law. He quickly became a central figure in fauvism, a movement characterised by vivid, pure and expressive colours. Throughout his career, Matisse sought to express light, joy and simplicity through clean shapes and a radiant palette.

" Paint must be used for something other than painting "

Henri Matisse

The works by Matisse exhibited at the musée de l'Orangerie are a good illustration of his transition between fauvism and its more decorative and orientalising period, marked by a taste for fabrics, calm poses and luxuriant interiors. It also shows his constant desire to simplify shapes while intensifying colours.

Did you know ?
In 1890, Matisse became seriously ill with appendicitis and had to stay in bed for a long time to recover. To give him something to do, his mother gave him a box of paints. This was when he discovered painting, which became a real revelation for him.
